Literacy remediation services are specialized interventions designed to help students who are struggling with reading, writing, spelling, or related language skills. These services aim to close skill gaps, often caused by learning disabilities like dyslexia, limited early reading instruction, or other educational barriers.
📚 Key Features of Literacy Remediation:
1. Targeted Instruction
- Based on assessments to identify specific areas of weakness (e.g., decoding, fluency, comprehension, phonological awareness).
- Instruction is individualized and tailored to the student’s unique needs.
2. Explicit and Systematic Teaching
- Skills are taught directly, in a clear and step-by-step way.
- Lisa is trained in
- Orton-Gillingham
- Structured Word Inquiry (SWI)
3. Multisensory Techniques
- Combines visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile learning to reinforce reading and writing skills.
4. Frequent, Consistent Sessions
- Delivery is via one-on-one sessions, several times a week, which can be conducted virtually.
- Repetition is a key to reinforcement of concepts.
🧠 What Skills Are Addressed?
- Phonemic awareness (hearing and manipulating sounds in words)
- Decoding (grapheme-phoneme correspondence )
- Spelling and encoding (writing)
- Reading comprehension (understanding what’s read)
- Grammar (phrases that help with understanding at the sentence level)
Math –
Math remediation refers to targeted instructional support designed to help students who struggle with math. Its goal is to address gaps in foundational understanding so students can succeed in grade-level or more advanced math.
📚 Key Features of Math Remediation:
- Number sense
- Place value
- Operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Fractions and decimals
- Problem-solving strategies
Explicit and Systematic Teaching
Lisa uses the Making Math Real(MMR) techniques developed by David Berg. This included an informal assessment of what gaps the student is struggling with and setting a foundation for high levels of math. MMR is explicit, step-by-step, with guidance and independent practice. There is a multi sensory, auditory and visual component during practice. Progress is monitored during each session for mastery and gap identification. MMR inherently improves working memory. Lisa has completed Making Math Real courses in 4 operations; fractions, decimals, and advanced placement, 9-lines (multiplication facts), geometry I and II, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2. This is over 500 hours of in-person (and later virtual) training.
Specialized Services:
Handwriting – Lisa teaches Real Script which is a specific way to print that was taught in the Renaissance. It teaches students about letter proportions to increase legibility. Much of the language discussed is found in calligraphy, although Real Script is not such. If your child’s handwriting is difficult to read, Lisa offers instruction in handwriting to help your child’s writing to be more legible.
Dyslexia screening – Lisa offers dyslexia screening for families who are concerned about their children. Screening does not provide a diagnosis but allows you to gain information about your child’s learning profile. . More in-depth assessments are available which are determined by the degree of information seeking and the extensiveness needed for that assessment.
Are you concerned about your child? Are you looking for someone who can work with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia? Reading, spelling, manuscript, and math? Online tutoring allows for access from your own home without travel. While it is the hope that you will be present, it is possible to provide tutoring in your absence. But more than tutoring, this is an educational therapy session which means that each meeting will be determined by your child’s needs rather than a scope and sequence that may or may not relevant to your child. A six-week commitment is requested to start. Thereafter, you can determine if this is the best medium for your child.
Training Note:
Lisa has completed Real Spelling courses in Latin for Orthography 1 & 2; Greek for Orthography; Blends, Hybrids, and Hyphens; Lexical Doublets, Lewis & Short, and many others. Lisa has also completed LEX courses of IPA, Old English for Orthographers; Strong Verbs; Syllables: fact or fiction; Zero Allophone; Stress and the Schwa; The Spell of Spelling and the Glamour of Grammar; Insights into Verbs; Advanced MSLE (year-long course); and Grammar for Grown-ups (year-long course). Lisa has also attended the Word Works summer institute with Pete Bowers in 2017.
