Similarities of other approaches

  • Grapheme-phoneme correspondences within a morphological framework
  • Multi-sensory engagement
  • Explicit instruction about orthography and its impact on reading
  • Instruction that is individualized to a student’s needs often termed diagnostic
  • Oral language manipulation

Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) is an evidence-based approach to literacy instruction that investigates the spelling, structure, meaning, and history of words to build deep understanding of the English writing system. Rather than teaching spelling as a set of rules with exceptions, SWI explores how and why words are spelled the way they are by analyzing:

Orthography (the conventions of written English)

Morphology (word parts like prefixes, bases, and suffixes)

Etymology (the origin and history of words)

Phonology (the sounds in words and how they relate to spelling)
